One of the standards of Gold Lettering is that the Lettering shall be done in a clear type face of an appropriate size to the book and in style and position as instructed or found on the original cover (if rebinding).  Note the impression is to be deeply impressed to insure long adhesion to the cover.

Note the word clear. This is important; because, the type face chosen must be legible.

It is also noted in the industry that a 'Book Weight' or Medium Weight type face is best.  This is because when foil stamped it is very readable and clear.  A Book Weight type faces shows the color well.  In contrast to a light or bold type face.  The light type face can not be seen by the eye and easily read.  The bold type face is more difficult to imprint and get complete coverage with the foil.

As a professional Bookbinder, Book Restorer or Conservationist you will use their best technical judgement as to the requirements of the particular type face to be used.  In these many pages of Ludlow Type Fonts you will have at your disposal a great many type faces to satisfy the requirement of the jobs that cross your work bench.
